First paragraph
First paragraph
Claudius is a murderer in both stories however, both Olivier and Branagh's interpretations alter his personality completely. In Branagh's interpretation Claudius is perceived as a man who genuinely cares as opposed to Olivier's version where Claudius is seemingly indifferent to hamlets suffering; however both versions of Claudius have obviously ulterior motives. This makes the Claudius in Branagh's version seem more psychotic and deceiving. He killed hamlets father and rather than reviling his truly malicious personality (as shown in olivier's) version, he conceals his animosity completely and even seems sympathetic to hamlets suffering. Moreover, in Branagh's version Claudius comes off as a gentle man when he speaks publicly and privately. In opposition, Olivier conveys Claudius as a very powerful man in public and even violet in private.
