Dysfunctional families

Pride and Prejudice
Outline

In pride and prejudice the Bennett family is very dysfunctional. A dysfunctional family is a family where there is conflict and disregard for the others. Mr.Bennett is particularly inconsiderate of the women in his family. He loves to make fun of them and shows no concern for Lydia's well being when she wanders off and engages in mischief. He sees the members of his family as items for amusement rather than showing true love and care for his children and wife. Similarly Mrs.Bennett sees her children as means to climb the social latter. All she cares about is reputation and money. While one may argue that she simply wants the best for her children, her view of "the best" is categorized by material achievements. Rather than wanting her daughters to be happy, her only concern is that they marry into money.

Act 3 Hamlet: Dean and Ally

lines 63-83
Hamlet
Body language: Have Hamlet walking back and forth turning each time his decision alters, signifying hamlet's internal conflict between life or death. looks up to the sky a lot, as if he is searching for an answer from a higher power.
Emotion: On the verge of tears, breaking down mentally and emotionally. He is becoming more vulnerable than ever.
Sad about the death of his father, and resents his mother for marrying Claudius.
Line delivery: He is crying and hysterical the entire soliloquy. He emphasises certain words and phases such as: "to die to sleep", almost screaming when he says this.

In class project

Dean and i chose the Hamlet monologue. We decided to portray Hamlet as an angry and frustrated man. He takes his anger that he has for his mother out on all woman. We thought that Hamlet should express his anger and frustration by pacing back and forth using a lot of hand motions

First paragraph

First paragraph

Claudius is a murderer in both stories however, both Olivier and Branagh's interpretations alter his personality completely. In Branagh's interpretation Claudius is perceived as a man who genuinely cares as opposed to Olivier's version where Claudius is seemingly indifferent to hamlets suffering; however both versions of Claudius have obviously ulterior motives. This makes the Claudius in Branagh's version seem more psychotic and deceiving. He killed hamlets father and rather than reviling his truly malicious personality (as shown in olivier's) version, he conceals his animosity completely and even seems sympathetic to hamlets suffering. Moreover, in Branagh's version Claudius comes off as a gentle man when he speaks publicly and privately. In opposition, Olivier conveys Claudius as a very powerful man in public and even violet in private.

Essay: Hamlet

Thesis: in Laurence olivier's vision of Hamlet he portrayed hamlet as a young solem man who is seated and who avoids eye contact with claudius and while his relationship with his other is is sere and loving, his relationship with claudius is superficial. On the other hand, kennith Branagh portrays claudius as caring and concerned. This portrayal makes hamlet come off as disturbed and confused. In this version he dresses hamlet in all black and Claudius is dressed in red and white, making hamlet appear as the vilan and Claudius appear as the righteous king.

Video analysis

Laurence Olivier- In his portrayal of Hamlet, he created a rather hostile environment. By having the king act so proud while simultaneously belittling Hamlet set a rather tense feel between the two characters. Furthermore, Hamlet sitting in a chair and avoiding eye contact made him seem helpless and meek while King Claudius appeared proud and powerful by parading around the room and literally talking down to  Hamlet. On the contrary, the relationship between Hamlet and Gertrude was very genuine, meaningful, and even incestuous. While she was still seemingly on the side of her husband it was clear that her heart was with her son.

BBC- In this version of Hamlet the queen seemed extremely distant and removed. She did not have the same affection and affinity for her son as the actress in the Olivier's version. Furthermore, it appeared that hamlet was on the offense rather than on the defense. He seemed to be the one that was condescending. And while Gertrude did show a certain amount of sympathy for her son, it was apparent that his relationship with both the king and his mother was already damaged.

Gertrude

Gertrude can be perceived as someone who is shallow and who does not have a mind of her own. I believe however, that Gertrude is not as dumb as she seems. I believe that she denies the truth and tells white lies simply to protect herself and others from the unfortunate truth. She does not want to believe her unfortunate reality so she acts as if all is well, when deep down she is fully aware of the evil and vengeance present in her family.

Views on the Ipad

Some Challenges:
It can creat problems if you forget to charge your ipad before class, because then the child would be essencially disabled from participating in class.
I also have the ipad one which constantly freezes and delays making it difficult for me to keep pase with the rest of my class mates
Some Bennifits:
It is easy to bring to class and not to forget because rather than having to carry four heavy books we have one ipad
The ipad allows me to annotate and highlight through kno, where i am then able to go and have my annotations and highlights all in one spot as oppose to reading with a book where i would have to flip through each page to find my highlights

Picking a mate

I believe that the best questions asked in class were the ones that focused on financial issues, as well as the ones that we focused on family history and upbringing.
I thought that these two types of questions provoked the most group discussion and allowed for people to bring up their different views and ideas.
What I enjoyed about our class lead discussion was that it put responsibility on us students to take change and become leaders. This activity also allowed for the students who are more withdrawn to participate and engage without the fear of saying the wrong answer. In this discussion there was no wrong answer, just different opinions.

1st Body Paragraph

Sciety in the time of this book was obviously consumed in social class as well as gender superiority. A woman was to typically get only one offer of marriage in a lifetime. This unfortunate true gave the women of that time a sense of desperation when seeking a husband. Furthermore, women did not have the option of picking who their spoce would be, their marriage was either arrainged or they would have to wait until a man chose them. In this novel gender and class are what give a person power. Darcy in particular is a man of great wealth who looks to be a viable candidate for marriage. However, his smug attitude and pompous demeaner made him unattractive to Mrs. Bennit who forbid Elizabeth from being with him. Although class and gender are primary factors in terms of social power and importance, first impressions also count for a lot. While Mrs.Bennit would have been thrilled if Elizabeth were to marry him, his distasteful attitude gave Elizabeth an upper hand in their relationship. While at fist Darcy was the one that needed to be impressed, her sharp remarks and nonshalant attitude intrigued him so much that she is now the one who must be impressed.

Intro paragraph

While Darcy clearly has the upper hand when looking at his social status and gender, Elizabeth's feisty attitude gives her more power in regards to their relationship. Pride and Prejudice takes place in a time where class and gender meant everything. Woman were to be married off and typically would not get more that one offer of marriage in a lifetime. While woman in the 21st century do not need to marry a man to provide themselves with economic stability, in the time in which this book takes place woman were required to find a wealthy husband in order to live a decent life. Elizabeth's quest for love makes her particularly intriguing to Mr.Darcy. Her desire to marry a man who she loves however, is not typical for a woman of her time. Although Elizabeth is socially viewed as inferior to Mr. Darcy, her self respect and bold personality giver her the advantage in their controversial romance.
